Butterfly Weed / Asclepias Tuberosa
Most people are usually only familiar with orange butterfly weed, but it comes in many bright attractive colors.
Butterfly weed is a small bushy perennial that grows about eighteen to twenty four inches tall. It is prized for attracting butterflies and pollinators and for its large flat top clusters of brightly colored flowers. the leaves are mostly alternate one and a half to two and a quarter inches long. They are pointed and smooth on the edges. the bright clusters of flowers are two to five inches across and are at the top of the flowering stem.The flower heads are showy and provide nectar for adult butterflies and bees. The leaves provide food for caterpillars including Monarch caterpillars.Although it is a milkweed this species has no milky sap.
